Prevention
Just like in anything else prevention is key. The Yellow Light of Death is a overheating problem and is caused when the circuits become disconnected from the circuit board. Most tips to prevent overheating are common sense however, few do them so I will list them anyway.
• Make sure your PS3 has plenty of breathing room, and is in a well ventilated space.
• Make sure there are no heat vents near your PS3 and that your PS3 is not near any other electronics that put out a lot of heat.
• Clean and dust your PS3 and around it often, dusk not only will clog your PlayStation's fans, but it also will act as an insulator an keeps the heat inside your PS3.
• Keeping your PS3 in a vertical position helps it dispense heat faster.
• Take a break after playing for a few hours, especially with a processor intensive game.
Fixing the Yellow Light of Death
So now you are probably asking yourself, "What if I already have the Yellow Light of Death?". The answer is simple you have three options.
1. Send your PlayStation 3 to Sony to have the pros fix it.
-This is a great option if your warranty hasn't expired yet but if it has been a couple of years and
you no longer have a warranty, Sony will force you to pay about $150.
2. Cut your losses and Upgrade to the Slim
-This is only a good option if you only have an older version of a PS3 and you have a good reason
but most people, myself included can't justify buying a whole new PlayStation 3.
3. Fix your PS3 yourself
-Many people think that this is a really daunting task but in reality it isn't too bad. There are many guides online that contain videos and pictures to show you exactly how fix your PS3 for a fraction of the cost. There are guides of about $30 that contain step by step video instructions to fix your PlayStation 3.
